Many psalms begin with a lament or complaint and end in worship, as the writer is comforted by thinking about the goodness of God. Oh, and one more thing: the Jews worshiped with songs written over a period of 700 years—and here we call 200-year-old hymns “old-fashioned.”. the 10 degrees refers to time, not weather: the retreating of the sun as seen by the shadow on the sundial. Some of the Psalms cry out to God during a trial and others seek his intervention in their (and others) affairs. However, the Qur’an recognizes David as a Prophet of God and attributes the Psalms to him. Persuade yourselves, with David, that the Lord is your defender, who hath compassed you round about, and is, as it were, a shield that doth cover you on every side.

At the beginning of some of David’s psalms, he notes what was happening in his life when he wrote that song. Most of their 11 psalms pour out a warm, personal adoration for God. Fifty of the Psalms do not mention their author, but many scholars believe David may have written some of these as well.
In fact, Psalms names more contributors than any other book of the Bible. Troubles always come in flocks. David was king of Israel for 40 years, chosen for the position because he was “a man after God’s own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14). Selah, (Heb.) Heman, on the other hand, starts with a lament and ends with a lament in Psalm 88, often pegged as the saddest psalm.
